Zora Mann

1979, Amersham, England
While working on the ventaglio, I was thinking about a lot of movement: heat waves, hot flashes, swooning, blushing. That is where the saturated pink tones come from. Wind has been present in my work for some time, because it is such an expressive and unstable force - it can be destructive, it can refresh, it can sweep you away, or it can arrive as something almost imperceptible, like a light breeze. I wanted this piece to feel charged with motion, but also intimate: the finger-like forms echo a hand, so that in using it, it feels almost like holding another hand. For me, the ventaglio becomes a gesture of movement, that can stir and shift energy.

Zora Mann

Ventaglio enters the radiant visual world of Zora Mann – an artist whose practice is instantly recognisable for its vibrant colour, intricate patterning, and dreamlike symbolic language. Her compositions often feel like portals: dense, luminous spaces where bodies, creatures, plants, and ornamental forms merge into one another, creating images that are both fantastical and deeply alive.

Rather than treating decoration as surface, Mann turns it into structure, energy, and meaning. Her work carries a sense of movement and inner transformation, where colour pulses, forms expand, and beauty becomes almost protective. In the context of Ventaglio, her contribution brings the fan into a world of motion, warmth, and transformation – not simply an object to be held, but a living gesture that opens, shifts, and releases its own current.
